Planning for the next phase of hydrogen transport development, SHHP is a collaboration initiative aiming to accelerate the introduction of hydrogen as a vehicle fuel in particular, and as an energy carrier in general.
The formation of the partnership was a move to strengthen the ability for Scandinavian entrepreneurs and enterprises to take advantage of this emerging technology as well as a contribution to the progress towards a more sustainable society.
In the introduction of emerging technologies, uncertainties and the need for long-term commitment call for cooperation and risk sharing. Therefore, a national networking body has been formed in each of the Scandinavian countries, independently of each other. These initiatives aim to prevent fragmentation and promote collaboration, allowing a wider network of actors to benefit from the learning and in that way accelerate the development of this emerging market in each country.
These three national networking bodies represent different experiences and competences, but are facing similar technical, social and economical challenges.
SHHPs targets
• Bringing Hydrogen demonstrations up to the next level
• Moving closer to a commercial market
• Spreading knowledge to a larger audience
• Showing a multitude of pathways for hydrogen supply with focus on sustainable hydrogen production
• Using local resources
• Bridging trans-national competencies
• Showing Hydrogen to be an alternative fuel with large GHG reduction potential
Vision
The SHHP vision is to make the Scandinavian region one of the first regions in Europe where hydrogen is commercially available and used in a network of refuelling stations.

Partnership coordinators
We are looking at the next level of development for 2008–2015
SHHP aims to make a significant contribution to forfilling EU’s hydrogen strategies and implementation plans.
A network of Hydrogen stations
• 15 stations
• 30 satellite stations
A large fleet of vehicles
• 100 buses
• 500 cars
• 500 speciality vehicles
Ambitions
To reach the vision SHHP aims to take hydrogen demonstration projects to the next level. The ambitions are to have up to 100 buses, 500 cars and 500 speciality vehicles on the roads in Scandinavia in the period 2012 to 2015.
SHHP also have the ambitions to demonstrate efficient fuel cell-based auxiliary power units in vehicles. To supply these vehicles with hydrogen fuel, several supply routes are being followed. The focus is to explore pathways of sustainable hydrogen, based on local resources and competencies in the three countries and regions.
Current plans are aiming at up to 15 nodes with hydrogen production and up to 30 satellite stations for supply of smaller volumes and to make distribution more widespread in rural areas.
The demonstration project can be considered as part of a market introduction phase for hydrogen supply and hydrogen vehicles, i.e. the demonstration will not be limited to a set number of years.
In addition, the project will comprise other cross-Nordic activities on technology and renewable energy sourcing; customer acceptance and outreach and lobbying; getting equalised frame conditions on i.a. standards, safety and certification; regulations and taxation.
